Adult Basic Education
Adult Basic
Education (ABE) classes are designed to provide basic skills instruction for
adults 18 and older whose math and reading skills have been assessed at
or below the GED readiness level. Many adults enroll in ABE with a
long-term goal of the GED exam; however, they may need the basic skills
instruction of ABE to be ready for the GED test-preparation course.
Adult High School Credit
Adult High
School Credit
classes offer the opportunity for adults to complete credit
requirements in English, Government, Math, and/or Science, and earn a
high school diploma. Students must be at least 18 years of age, have
completed at least 10th grade, and be in need of no more than 2
to 3 credits for high school completion, to enroll in the Adult High
School Credit program. Semester course fees are $100 per 1/2
credit.
TOEFL
The TOEFL
preparation class is designed to help adults whose native language is
not English, but whose English language skills are at least
intermediate level. It is specifically for students who wish to
prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
Passing scores on
the TOEFL are a pre-registration requirement of many colleges and
universities for foreign-born students, to demonstrate adequate English
language skills for college-level reading, writing, and other
communication demands. Tuition: $100; Study guide: $40.
U.S. Citizenship
U.S. Citizenship
classes are designed to prepare immigrants for the U.S. Citizenship
test and interview. The class is appropriate for adults whose English
language skills are at least intermediate level. (Prior ESOL
instruction is recommended for those adults who are at the beginning
level of English language development.) Tuition: $25.

GED Preparation
General
Educational Development (GED) Preparation classes are designed to
prepare adult students, 18 and older, for the GED High School Equivalency
exam. Generally, students must demonstrate reading, writing, and math
skills above the 8th grade level to be properly enrolled in the
GED review course. This course prepares students for the five subject
area tests of the GED battery: math, science, social studies, writing
skills, and literature and the arts.
Textbooks and internet
based materials are available for use in the classroom and at home.

The registration
process for ABE, ESOL and GED Preparation classes includes a skill
assessment and a registration fee of $20.00 per class.
Adults registered in RARAE
classes may have their test fee waived through class attendance and
successful completion of GED Practice Test.

ESOL
English for
Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) classes are designed for
foreign-born, non-English speaking adults and those whose first
language is not English. ESOL classes offer instruction in English
language conversational skills, writing, reading, and vocabulary
development.
External Diploma Program
The National
External Diploma Program (EDP) provides a competency-based approach to high
school completion, and awards a high school diploma upon completion of
a portfolio demonstrating total mastery of 65 academic and vocational
competencies.
This program is for
adults 21 and older. Credit is given for job training and
experience. Demonstration of life management skills involving
mathematics, reading comprehension, and written expression is required.
The Regional
Adult Education program at Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center
is certified by the American Council on Education as an EDP site. Diagnostic
fee: $150; $700 assessment phase.
