Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are designed to provide basic skills instruction for adults 18 and older whose math and reading skills have been assessed at or below the GED readiness level. Many adults enroll in ABE with a long-term goal of the GED exam; however, they may need the basic skills instruction of ABE to be ready for the GED test-preparation course.

 Adult High School Credit

Adult High School Credit classes offer the opportunity for adults to complete credit requirements in English, Government, Math, and/or Science, and earn a high school diploma. Students must be at least 18 years of age, have completed at least 10th grade, and be in need of no more than 2 to 3 credits for high school completion, to enroll in the Adult High School Credit program.  Semester course fees are $100 per 1/2 credit.

TOEFL

The TOEFL preparation class is designed to help adults whose native language is not English, but whose English language skills are at least intermediate level.  It is specifically for students who wish to prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

Passing scores on the TOEFL are a pre-registration requirement of many colleges and universities for foreign-born students, to demonstrate adequate English language skills for college-level reading, writing, and other communication demands.  Tuition:  $100; Study guide: $40.

U.S. Citizenship

U.S. Citizenship classes are designed to prepare immigrants for the U.S. Citizenship test and interview. The class is appropriate for adults whose English language skills are at least intermediate level. (Prior ESOL instruction is recommended for those adults who are at the beginning level of English language development.)  Tuition:  $25.

 GED Preparation

General Educational Development (GED) Preparation classes are designed to prepare adult students, 18 and older, for the GED High School Equivalency exam. Generally, students must demonstrate reading, writing, and math skills above the 8th grade level to be properly enrolled in the GED review course. This course prepares students for the five subject area tests of the GED battery: math, science, social studies, writing skills, and literature and the arts.   Textbooks and internet based materials are available for use in the classroom and at home.

The registration process for ABE, ESOL and GED Preparation classes includes a skill assessment and a registration fee of $20.00 per class.

Adults registered in RARAE classes may have their test fee waived through class attendance and successful completion of GED Practice Test.

ESOL

English for Speakers of Other Language  (ESOL) classes are designed for foreign-born, non-English speaking adults and those whose first language is not English. ESOL classes offer instruction in English language conversational skills, writing, reading, and vocabulary development.

The National External Diploma Program (EDP) provides a competency-based approach to high school completion, and awards a high school diploma upon completion of a portfolio demonstrating total mastery of 65 academic and vocational competencies.

This program is for adults 21 and older. Credit is given for job training and experience. Demonstration of life management skills involving mathematics, reading comprehension, and written expression is required.

The Regional Adult Education program at Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center is certified by the American Council on Education as an EDP site. Diagnostic fee: $150; $700 assessment phase.
